Position Overview: A co-chair of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus seeks a policy fellow to lend technical expertise to educate the office as it develops and advances legislative initiatives in the fields of animal protection, protein innovation, food technology, and agricultural systems reform. The fellow will serve as a policy advisor on relevant policy issues while gaining firsthand experience in the legislative process.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate emerging animal protection, food technologies, and alternative protein innovations for policy development
- Educate policymakers on legislation, amendments, and committee materials related to food systems and animal policy
- Track relevant bills and provide voting recommendations
- Coordinate bipartisan briefings on food innovation topics
- Represent the Member in stakeholder meetings with industry, researchers, and advocates
- Support the Member's committee work on agriculture and food policy
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required
- Knowledge of the animal protection and food technology landscape, including alternative proteins
- Strong writing, research, and communication skills
- Ability to distill complex technical information for policy application
Impact Opportunity:
Direct policy work provides one of the clearest paths to impact, given that a remarkably small group of Congressional staffers are responsible for drafting the four and six million new words added to the US legal code every two years and directing trillions of dollars in annual government spending. The United States Congress is one of the most important institutions shaping the lives and circumstances of billions of animals. This position presents a tremendous opportunity to build career capital and institutional knowledge, both of which are likely to greatly impact the ability to positively influence policy decisions that enhance welfare for animals and drive innovation in our food system even after one leaves a direct government role. The fellow will gain direct experience in the legislative process and develop professional relationships that extend well beyond the fellowship term, positioning them for continued impact on these issues.
The expected salary range for this position is $70,000-$90,000, depending on previous background and qualifications. Exceptionally qualified candidates may be eligible for compensation above this range.
Application Process:
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Qualified candidates should submit this form expressing interest as soon as possible. Candidates may be placed in concert with a sponsoring entity with experience facilitating and managing fellowships across think tanks, congressional offices and executive agencies in Washington DC.
