Plan and execute complex technical work for go to market, proactive and analytical projects under the direction of technical leaders; provide key technical support to project teams and has the ability to lead small scope projects internally or externally; the incumbent is expected to have a legacy of technical creativity, allowing them to develop technical insight and recommendations that support project decision-making, category strategy and customers propositions to highlight IFF product advantage.
Responsibilities/Description
Establish role as the strong technical part of a team working on strategic or G2M projects, give input on results, findings & suggest next steps
Plan & manage work with little guidance from senior technical staff
Use project management skills to independently work on small technical projects (internal/external) to show self-sufficiency
Able to consult management to obtain appropriate resource or expertise
Work in partnership with other multidisciplinary departments such as R&D, Sales, Perfumery, & Marketing/CI
Visit customers with other team members to listen to issues & give input on possible solutions
Execute the relevant parts of the project within the given timelines
Learn to cost out key technologies to stay within project guidelines
Begin to suggest possible projects & help form the strategy for the category/cross category
Participate in new concept generation on cross functional project teams for specific customers
Use creative/innovative skills to develop relevant new concepts for the given category or application (possible fragrance solutions)
Develop new methodologies to prove concepts are working: Analytical or sensory
Suggest & implement ways to improve current processes or methodologies to reduce time, cost or increase performance
Stability Evaluator Role(if required): Conduct risk assessment of fragrance formula; Manage stability rework with perfumers; Fine Fragrance-Manage color matching & stability rework for colored alcohol solutions
Be aware of new trends in base formulation due to innovation, regulatory or convenience-Anticipate their impact & suggest studies to understand or alternative solutions
Be aware of fragrance ingredient regulatory issues that could impact usage of ingredient types-Anticipate by suggesting & testing alternatives
Attend a trade show &/or become a member of a trade association to stay abreast of industry trends
Write up all laboratory notes in IFF knowledge management tools in a clear & concise way to be readily understood by all that have access & be able to show & encourage others to use the system
Write presentations & reports to be able to share work with others & store in IFF knowledge management tools with the correct search fields added
Communicate learnings (verbally & written) to internal project teams
Summarize & share key insights for future work
Review & finalize newly written protocols fornew applications
Understand the purpose of the technical/innovation programs & how they contribute to the overall category/customer strategy
Be able to talk competently about all ST&I disciplines & in detail about those specialized in
Develop higher degree of intimacy with 1-2 ST&I disciplines (champion principle)
Be able to read, understand, & give meaningful comments on competitor IP-Reconstruct the competitor experimentation or testing where needed
Be able to give input into where unique IP could be possible on active projects where involved
Write sections of IP where involved in the experimentation or testing
Stay current on where interesting developments for IFF are coming from & advise leadership of the development & why it could be interesting for IFF
Work with scientists & managers from third parties on developing methodology to achieve our joint objectives where applicable
Share or present results & findings with our third party & suggest next steps
Utilize the understanding of the main base components in market product benchmarks per relevant category & application in order to create fragrance solutions
Make suggestions for applying IFF technologies/fragrances to customer bases
Understand consumer insight statistics
Engage sensory/CI to create POC & POP testing
Be responsible for writing a Personal Development Plan that ensures the ability to meet the current job role requirements, but gives the required ability to achieve the next level when appropriate
Have a network of IFF staff &/or external partners that can help achieve the required capabilities
Utilize internal & external training tools to enhance both soft skills & technical knowledge
Mentor new & more junior members of the group
Stand in for Managers or Senior Scientists at project meetings when they are not available
Requirements
Required Experience:
PhD or BS/MS & a minimum 6 - 8 years’ experience in the industrial food, pharmaceutical, chemical, cosmetic, consumer goods, &/or fragrance industry
Knowledgeable in lab safety, relevant application, raw materials, & chemical processes
Can work independently on projects without direct manager supervision
Project Management skills
Training/Certifications
Essential: BS degree in Science & Technology, Chemistry or related discipline
Preferred: MS/PhD degree in Science & Technology, Chemistry or related discipline
