Who we are
Calidris Bio is a biotech startup developing fermentation processes to produce Microbial Protein. Using our proprietary technology, we create high-quality vegan protein with a low environmental footprint.
We are currently scaling our process to enter both the food and feed markets.
Where
Our laboratory is located at the BlueChem incubator for sustainable chemistry (Olieweg 95, Antwerp, Belgium). Calidris Bio is working alongside other startups focused on sustainable innovations in chemistry and biotechnology that are located in the same building.
General role
In close collaboration with the Calidris Bio team, you will contribute to the analysis of microbial metabolic pathways. Your work will support optimization for microbial protein production. You will apply bioinformatics tools and databases to analyse the genome, the genomic architecture, interpret genotypic/phenotypic data and help identify key metabolic routes relevant to our production goals.
Responsibilities
• Annotating and curating microbial genome data including protein analysis by sequence alignment (BLAST, Alphafold)
• Performing pathway analysis using genome-scale metabolic models and bioinformatics tools
• Identifying metabolic bottlenecks and opportunities for process improvement
• Documenting and presenting your findings in team meetings and written reports
• Maintaining accurate and organized records of all research activities
Qualifications
• Master student in Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or related field
• Familiarity with microbial genomics and metabolic pathway databases (e.g., KEGG, MetaCyc)
• Experience with bioinformatics tools such as BLAST, COBRApy, or similar
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently and in a team
• Good communication skills and proficiency in English. Knowledge of Dutch is a plus.
Offer
We offer a temporary position or student job in a dynamic startup environment, with the opportunity to contribute to sustainable biotechnology innovation.
