ABOUT THE ROLE
Multus is seeking a versatile and hands-on Bioengineer to support our laboratory automation systems and protocol development. This is a junior-level role perfect for someone with a strong technical and engineering foundation who enjoys working at the intersection of biology, software, and integrated systems. You'll help maintain our automation infrastructure, develop and implement laboratory protocols, and contribute to backend system development as you grow with the team.
This role offers significant learning opportunities and career development in a fast-growing biotech startup. You'll work closely with research scientists and engineers to keep our high-throughput platform running smoothly while gaining exposure to cutting-edge automation technology and cell culture media optimization.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Support maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory automation systems including liquid handlers, dispensers, robotic platforms, and analytical instruments
Act as first responder to automation system issues, including out-of-hours troubleshooting and system recovery when needed to ensure smooth experiment execution
Develop and implement automated protocols for cell culture and biochemical workflows, including assay development and liquid handling procedures
Responsible for protocol implementation on automated systems, working with research scientists to translate experimental needs into automated workflows
Contribute to backend system development and software integration projects as skills develop
Provide hands-on technical support for automation platform users and help resolve day-to-day operational issues
Document system maintenance, protocol development, and troubleshooting activities according to company standards
Participate in system testing, calibration, and validation activities to ensure reliability and performance
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including research scientists, data scientists, and senior engineers
Learn and apply new technical skills across software, hardware, and biological systems
Support additional research and operational activities as needed to meet company objectives
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

BSc or MSc in Engineering (Biomedical, Mechanical, Electronic, Computer Science, or related field) with strong technical foundation or equivalent level of practical experience
Demonstrated hands-on technical experience through projects, internships, or previous roles - a strong portfolio is essential
Foundational understanding of mechanical, electronic, and software systems and ability to work across multiple technical domains
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues independently
Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
Enthusiasm for learning new skills and technologies across software, hardware, and biological systems
Attention to detail and commitment to documentation and quality standards
Right to work in the UK (we are unable to sponsor visas for this position)
The following skills and experiences would help you stand out even more:
Experience with laboratory automation systems, liquid handling robots, or analytical instruments
Familiarity with cell culture techniques, bioprocess engineering, or laboratory workflows
Experience with network engineering, microcontrollers, embedded systems, or rapid prototyping (e.g., 3D printing, CAD)
Knowledge of data analysis, machine learning, or bioinformatics
Previous work in a startup or fast-paced research environment
