Overview:
The R&D Assistant supports the Research & Development team in product formulation, laboratory testing, shelf-life validation, documentation, and project coordination. This role combines hands-on technical work with strong organizational support to help ensure that product development activities, plant trials, ingredient evaluations, and third-party testing are completed accurately and on time.
The R&D Assistant plays an important role in supporting innovation, maintaining organized technical records, and helping the team meet food safety, quality, SQF, and regulatory requirements.
Statement of Work & Responsibilities:
Product Development Support
Assist in the development and optimization of new and existing products, including prototypes and formulations
Support ingredient trials to meet clean-label, allergen-free, plant-based, cost, and sensory targets
Help prepare bench samples and support formula adjustments during development
Document formulations, observations, and trial results clearly and accurately
Shelf-Life Validation & Laboratory Testing
Support shelf-life studies by preparing, organizing, and tracking test samples and results
Conduct laboratory testing such as pH, Brix, viscosity, sensory review, and other routine evaluations
Record and organize data from shelf-life, formulation, and ingredient validation work
Flag unusual results or inconsistencies for review by the R&D team
Plant Trial & Scale-Up Support
Assist with pilot plant and production trials, including preparation of materials, sample collection, and trial follow-up
Monitor product performance during trials and help document results, observations, and next steps
Support scale-up activities by ensuring formulas, instructions, and trial notes are well organized and available
Ingredient & Documentation Support
Help gather and organize ingredient documentation such as specifications, COAs, allergen statements, and other technical documents
Support review and filing of ingredient information in collaboration with QA and Procurement
Maintain organized and up-to-date R&D records, folders, trackers, and reports
Support preparation of technical documents, formulations, and label-related information as needed
Third-Party Testing Coordination
Prepare and submit samples for external laboratory testing as needed
Track timelines, follow up on pending results, and maintain organized records of third-party reports
Ensure external test reports are filed properly and shared with the relevant teams
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with R&D, Quality, Procurement, Operations, and other teams to support product development and commercialization
Communicate project updates, testing status, and documentation needs clearly and on time
Support smooth hand-offs between lab development, plant trials, and production
Lab Organization & Continuous Improvement
Maintain cleanliness, organization, and readiness of the lab, equipment, and sample storage areas
Help improve R&D workflows, templates, and data tracking systems
Support standardization of documentation and contribute to knowledge sharing within the team
Skills & Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or college diploma in Food Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field
1–3 years of relevant experience in food, beverage, or product development is preferred
Basic understanding of formulation development, shelf-life testing, food ingredients, and processing
Familiarity with lab equipment such as pH meters, refractometers, and viscometers
Strong attention to detail, organization, and documentation skills
Good problem-solving and time management skills
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
Eagerness to learn and support multiple projects at the same time
