About Phytokana Ingredients Inc.
Phytokana is an independent Alberta-based innovator, processor, developer and distributor of novel, sustainable pulse ingredients for use in diverse applications in the food, beverage and baked goods industries. We are building a plant protein innovation hub in Strathmore, Alberta – our processing facility will sustainably source novel pulse crops to produce high-purity protein concentrates and flours from our low emissions fractionation facility.
Role Overview
The Business Analyst will support the Company's business development, capital investment, and strategic decision-making through the development of sophisticated financial models, budgeting, forecasting, and business analysis. The role requires exceptional analytical capabilities, advanced Excel modelling skills, and the ability to transform complex operational and financial data into actionable insights.
This position provides an excellent opportunity for a high-performing early-career professional to work directly with senior leadership on major capital projects, corporate finance initiatives, strategic planning, and business performance analysis.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Modelling
· Develop and maintain complex financial models to support business development, strategic planning and corporate decision-making.
· Build integrated three-statement financial models, project finance models, valuation models, and capital investment analyses.
· Perform discounted cash flow (DCF), NPV, IRR, sensitivity, and scenario analyses.
· Develop operating models supporting production planning, revenue forecasting, and profitability analysis.
Capital Planning & Investment Analysis
· Evaluate capital projects and business initiatives through detailed financial analysis.
· Support project economics, return on investment analyses, and investment committee materials.
· Prepare sensitivity analyses around commodity prices, operating assumptions, financing, and capital costs.
· Support financing activities and capital information requirements.
Business Analysis
· Analyze operational and financial data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
· Develop management dashboards and KPI reporting.
· Prepare presentations and analytical reports for executive management and the Board of Directors.
· Support strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate development initiatives as required.
Cross-Functional Support
· Work closely with Finance, Operations, Commercial, Engineering, and Executive Management.
· Support ad hoc financial analyses and special projects.
Your attributes & competencies:
Advanced Excel modelling skills, including the ability to design, build and maintain complex, dynamic financial models from first principles using advanced formulas, VBA/macros and automation techniques
Strong understanding of accounting and financial statements
Excellent quantitative and problem-solving skills
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Knowledge of project finance or capital investment analysis
You are proactive, organized, and comfortable managing multiple priorities, deadlines, and stakeholders.
You are comfortable working with data, dashboards, and business intelligence tools, including Power BI, to translate operational and financial information into clear reporting and actionable insights.
You have an interest in using technology, automation, and AI to improve financial reporting and business processes.
Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree in: Business, Finance, Economics, Accounting, Commerce; Engineering Economics
1-5 years of relevant experience in Corporate Finance, Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), Investment Banking, Consulting, Accounting, Corporate Development, Project Finance
Recent graduates with exceptional analytical capabilities are encouraged to apply.
Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is considered a strong asset.
Strong Excel, Power BI/dashboarding, financial modelling, and analytical skills.
Interest or experience using AI tools to improve finance, reporting, forecasting, or business processes is considered an asset.
Work Environment:
The role is based in our head office in Calgary, Alberta with occasional travel required.
