Are you ready to pursue a PhD where advanced computational modeling helps shape the future of food texture and sensory perception?
IFF is a global leader in flavors, fragrances, food ingredients, and health & biosciences. We deliver sustainable innovations that elevate everyday products.
We create effective and sustainable solutions with improved nutritional profiles, taste, and texture for food and beverage manufacturers around the world.
The role is based in Brabrand, Denmark, with close collaboration with Aarhus University, Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering. This is a hybrid position offered as a 3‑year Industrial PhD, with an approximate 50/50 split between industry and academia. You will join a curious, analytical, and collaborative team where science meets real‑world impact. Your potential is our inspiration.
Where You’ll Make a Difference?
• Conduct shear and extensional rheological measurements on model food systems
• Develop constitutive material models capturing viscoelastic, thixotropic, and yield‑stress behavior
• Build finite‑element (FEM) models of rheological experiments using Comsol Multiphysics
• Develop fluid–structure interaction (FSI) models to simulate food bolus dynamics in realistic mouth geometries
• Integrate oral processing effects such as dilution, enzymatic action, and comminution into simulation frameworks
• Apply deep neural networks to link physical model outputs with sensory panel data
• Contribute to the development of a predictive in‑silico sensory engine for food texture
• Publish results in high‑impact scientific journals and present at international conferences
• Transfer modeling tools, insights, and workflows into industrial R&D applications within IFF
What Makes You the Right Fit?
• Completed Master’s degree (MSc) in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, or a related field
• Strong mathematical and computational background (PDEs, continuum mechanics, numerical modeling, FEM)
• Academic or applied experience in rheology or soft‑matter physics
• Solid programming skills (Python, MATLAB, or similar)
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in multidisciplinary environments
• Clear and effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal
• Willingness to commit to a full‑time, 3‑year Industrial PhD position based in Denmark
How Would You Stand Out?
• Experience with Comsol Multiphysics, FEM, FSI, or CFD modeling
• Background in machine learning or neural networks
• Interest in sensory science and human perception of food
Why Choose Us?
• Fully funded 3‑year Industrial PhD with full‑time employment at IFF
• Work on a scientifically ambitious and industrially relevant research project
• Close collaboration with Aarhus University and international academic partners
• Access to state‑of‑the‑art laboratories, HPC resources, and expert mentors
• Opportunity for international research stays (e.g. collaboration with Drexel University)
• A strong career foundation at the intersection of science and industry
