Are you a plastics technologist, process technician or lab technician who feels at home on an extrusion line? Do you enjoy dialling in a process until the material runs exactly the way it should, and would you like to do that for a material that replaces plastic instead of adding more of it?
noriware is an innovative materials science company specializing in the development of advanced materials processing technologies. We are creating breakthrough algae-based alternatives for packaging and other plastic applications. By integrating novel biochemistry with existing machinery and infrastructure in the plastics industry, we set new standards for sustainable, mechanically functional packaging films. Our team of highly skilled scientists and industry experts continuously drive innovation to develop new material solutions that help the industry transition beyond plastic.
Your role
As a lab technician / plastics technologist at noriware, you are the person who keeps our lines running. You set up, operate and maintain our compounding extruders and film extrusion lines, produce the compounds and films our development and customer projects depend on, and work side by side with our polymer engineers and chemists to turn new formulations into stable, repeatable processes.
Your tasks
- Set up, start up, operate and shut down our compounding extruders and film extrusion lines, including screw configuration, die set-up, downstream equipment and winding.
- Run compounding and film production and trial campaigns to specification: feed and dose raw materials, monitor process parameters such as temperature profiles, torque, melt pressure, throughput and line speed, and adjust the line to keep film thickness and quality within tolerance.
- Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance - cleaning and changeover of screws, dies, screens and filters, purging, wear inspection, lubrication and minor repairs - and coordinate external service partners for larger interventions.
- Prepare, weigh, dry and pre-condition raw materials and compounds, and keep batch records, sample labelling and material traceability complete and up to date.
- Perform in-process and routine quality checks (e.g. film thickness, appearance, basic mechanical and sealing tests) and document the results carefully in our documentation system.
- Support the R&D and engineering team during trials and scale-up by preparing the line, running parameter series and giving structured feedback on processability and observed material behaviour.
- Keep the pilot plant and lab in good order: machine logbooks, spare parts and consumables, SOPs and maintenance plans, and consistent compliance with our safety and waste-handling rules.
Requirements
- Completed vocational training as a Plastics Technologist EFZ (Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training), ideally with the extrusion specialisation, or as a process technician, laboratory technician or polymechanic - or a comparable technical education with a focus on plastics processing.
- Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience operating extrusion equipment - compounding and/or film extrusion (cast or blown) - in a production, pilot or lab environment.
- Practical understanding of how process settings influence melt behaviour, film quality and throughput, and the confidence to adjust a running line.
- Solid mechanical skills for changeovers and maintenance: pulling and cleaning screws, assembling dies, changing screens and filters, and troubleshooting typical line faults.
- Careful, structured documentation habits - a trial is only worth as much as the data recorded alongside it.
- Comfortable in a lab environment and with routine sample preparation and testing.
- Experience with bio-based, filled or moisture-sensitive materials is a strong plus; hands-on experience with polysaccharide-based materials is highly welcome.
- Good command of German and/or English; the working language in our team is English.
- Hands-on, safety-conscious and solution-oriented team player who is comfortable in a start-up setting with evolving priorities and willing to support longer trial campaigns when needed.
Our team
Our team at noriware consists of highly qualified and dedicated experts from various disciplines. Together, we combine extensive experience in materials science, polymer engineering, biochemistry, analytical chemistry and product management to achieve our ambitious goals and shape the future of plastic-free materials.
