About Mobius
Mobius is a family office based in California that focuses on reducing the suffering of farmed animals in the food system. In addition to our grantmaking, we have incubated or helped incubate several projects that support this goal, such as Senterra Funders (formerly Farmed Animal Funders), The Pollination Project and Food Solutions Action. As one of the top ten largest funders of farmed animal work globally, Mobius plays a unique role in the global movement to end factory farming.
Job Overview
We are looking for someone to join the team to lead two primary areas: our grantmaking and entrepreneurial projects.
Grants: You will evaluate grant opportunities, manage relationships with grantees, and handle logistics for our annual donations to support non-profits working to reduce animal suffering and end factory farming. You will be the primary person driving our grantmaking and project work, while working closely with a small team that collaborates on strategic decisions and signs off on grants. We estimate that we are in the top ten largest funders (in dollars granted) of farmed animal work globally.
Entrepreneurial projects: You will do research and help execute on emergent projects or ideas that come up in the course of our work. Previous examples of this work include:
- Identifying US political efforts as a white space and organizing a research project that has led to a new 501(c)(4) / PAC being launched – Food Solutions Action
- Collaborating with other funders to create an RFP focused on US college groups
- Piloting a project to encourage more value-aligned individuals to work in Congress, and hiring a program manager to lead this effort
- Offering meditation retreats for animal advocates in multiple languages and countries
This role will flex to match the interests, skillset, and individuality of the person in it.
We are open to hiring at two different seniorities:
- Philanthropy Manager: 3+ years relevant experience (e.g. working at farmed animal advocacy or alternative protein nonprofits, foundations or similar government roles).
You will own the grantmaking portfolio, but we expect a longer ramp-up period. You may be earlier in developing your network within the funder and advocacy communities, and still forming your independent views on movement strategy. We'll invest in your development accordingly.
- Director of Philanthropy: 5+ years of relevant experience
You will own the grantmaking portfolio. You bring an existing network of relationships with funders and advocates, strong independent views on where the highest-impact opportunities lie, and the ability to credibly represent Mobius externally from day one.
Responsibilities and Duties
Entrepreneurial Projects
- Research: Conduct deep-dive research into "white spaces" in the movement and produce written outputs that inform decisions
- Incubation: Scope and execute projects (like RFPs or new nonprofits) from initial idea to stable hand-off.
Grantmaking
- Grant evaluation & due diligence: Own Mobius's grantmaking portfolio. Assess grant opportunities across farm animal welfare, conduct due diligence, build cost-effectiveness models, and write up recommendations for approval by the team
- Grantee relationship management: Maintain regular communication with grantees to track progress, understand evolving needs, and identify non-financial ways Mobius can add value
- Active grantmaking: Spend time actively developing possible funding opportunities and finding ways to make our grants more catalytic, such as by creative donation matching
- Funder coordination: Engage with peer funders (e.g., through Senterra Funders) to share intelligence, coordinate funding, and stay current on movement-wide priorities
- Strategy & landscape: Maintain a working understanding of the farm animal welfare movement globally, key organizations, interventions, funding gaps, and emerging opportunities, and proactively surface high-impact opportunities
Operations
- Management: Manage a Project & Operations Coordinator who supports the team and project execution
- External representation: Represent Mobius at conferences, funder convenings, and in relationships with nonprofit leaders
What we’re looking for:
- Animal-driven: You have a deep, demonstrable commitment to farmed animal welfare, ideally shown through volunteer work, professional experience, or related activities.
- Movement experience: You have familiarity with organizations and interventions working on farm animal protection, meat reduction and alt protein
- Analytically rigorous: You're comfortable with quantitative reasoning and building cost-effectiveness models. You should be someone who naturally asks "how big is this effect?" and "what would change my mind?".
- Action-oriented: You are happy quickly creating minimum viable products and iterating, rather than perfecting a product before launching.
- Exceptionally competent: You are highly organized, with a keen eye for detail. You love creating order out of chaos and can juggle multiple tasks without letting anything slip through the cracks.
- Growth mindset: You are willing to learn new things and see challenges and feedback as opportunities to grow. You're not afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
- Proactive & hardworking: You have a strong work ethic and don't wait to be told what to do. You are a resourceful problem-solver who takes initiative to free up your team's time.
- Working with people you disagree with: You can productively work with those who hold different perspectives or values from you.
- Tech-curious & AI-enthusiastic: You are genuinely excited by the potential of new technologies, especially AI. You enjoy experimenting with new tools and are eager to find ways to boost efficiency.
- Collaborative & open-minded: You work well within a small, collaborative team where strategic decisions are made collectively. You're a clear communicator and reliable team player who is also comfortable with our team’s use of mindfulness practices.
Benefits and travel
This is a full-time position accompanied by a competitive benefits package including healthcare reimbursement, a 401(k) retirement plan with employer match, generous paid time off, a $4,000 annual professional development allowance, and 80% reimbursement for personal development and mind/body wellness (each up to $1,500).
This position is based in the United States and includes regular travel to the San Francisco area for around 1 week per quarter. Some other travel to conferences and work events (~2-4 times per year) will also be required.

- The potential for a huge impact on improving the lives of farmed animals
- The ability to significantly shape the direction and success of various projects within Mobius
