What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for a Research Associate, Process Chemistry & Quality to join our growing R&D team. In this lab-based role, you’ll help drive innovation and ensure product consistency by developing and executing analytical testing protocols that support process development, product innovation, and quality control. You’ll collaborate closely with teams across R&D, Quality, and Operations to uphold scientific rigor, data accuracy, and regulatory alignment.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, hands-on environment and brings a strong foundation in protein chemistry, analytical techniques, and quality systems.
What You’ll Do
Analytical Chemistry & Product Testing
Conduct routine and non-routine testing on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products using techniques such as:
Rheology, texture analysis, viscosity, particle size analysis, and emulsion stability
SDS-PAGE, UV-Vis, fluorescence-based assays, protein quantification (BCA, Bradford)
HPLC and other chromatography-based methods as needed
Prepare product batches for R&D evaluation and conduct sensory and analytical assessments
Apply statistical methods to analyze data and summarize trends or deviations
Parnter with scientists to troubleshoot formulation and performance issues
Quality Control & Assurance
Support timely product release by executing relevant analytical tests
Maintain detailed documentation (e.g., SOPs, protocols, batch records) in compliance with QA standards
Help build and implement QA/QC programs across R&D and pilot production
Perform routine calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of lab instruments
Contribute to investigations and root cause analyses for deviations or nonconformances
Conduct in-process checks, final inspections, and raw material verifications
Lab Operations & Collaboration
Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organized lab environment
Track inventory, manage samples, and coordinate lab supply orders
Actively participate in lab meetings and project updates
Identify and suggest opportunities to improve testing accuracy, speed, and reliability
What You’ll Bring
S. or M.S. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, or related field
3-5 years of industry experience in analytical chemistry, process chemistry, QA/QC, or similar lab-based roles
Proficiency with protein analytical methods (e.g. rheology, texture analysis, protein quantification etc.)
Hands-on experience with SOPs, quality systems, or document control in R&D or manufacturing is a strong plus
Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and communication abilities
Experience working in a startup or fast-paced environment strongly preferred
Based in the Bay Area (local candidates only)

Compensation: The expected base salary range for this role (based in Alameda, CA) is $90,000–$130,000 per year. Final compensation will be based on skills, experience, and overall contribution to the role.
