Main Functions
The Director, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) provides strategic and functional leadership for occupational health, workplace safety, and environmental stewardship across North American Baking.
The role establishes the NAB HSE vision, governance framework, standards, and performance expectations; enables site leadership to meet applicable legal and company requirements; and drives a proactive culture focused on preventing injuries, occupational illnesses, environmental incidents, and operational disruption.
The Director serves as the senior NAB resource for HSE risk, compliance, management systems, incident escalation, environmental performance, and continuous improvement across manufacturing and supporting operations in the United States and Canada.
Direct Reporting
Reports to: VP Operations, North American Baking.
Provides functional leadership and direction to site HSE personnel and designated environmental resources. Final direct-report structure is determined by NAB organizational design.
Essential Functions
HSE Strategy and Governance: Develop and maintain a multi-year NAB HSE strategy, annual priorities, policies, standards, and minimum operating requirements aligned with business objectives and company expectations. Translate strategy into measurable site plans and clear accountability.
Leadership and Culture: Partner with executives, Directors, Plant Managers, functional leaders, and employees to strengthen visible leadership, employee engagement, reporting, learning, and safe and environmentally responsible behaviors. Coach site leaders and HSE professionals.
Regulatory Compliance: Establish processes to identify, interpret, and comply with applicable federal, state, provincial, and local occupational health, safety, and environmental requirements. Maintain oversight of permits, required records, regulatory submissions, monitoring, inspections, and corrective actions.
Risk Assessment and Critical Controls: Direct enterprise and site-level risk assessment processes for occupational hazards, process and chemical risks, environmental aspects, waste, emissions, wastewater and effluent, spill prevention, emergency conditions, and contractor activities. Ensure critical controls are defined, verified, and sustained.
Environmental Management and Stewardship: Lead NAB environmental programs and improvement plans, including environmental compliance, ISO 14001 principles, water and effluent management, waste minimization, chemical handling and storage, spill prevention and response, land application where applicable, and environmental monitoring.
Incident Management and Learning: Define requirements for reporting, escalation, investigation, root-cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions, and organizational learning for injuries, near misses, occupational illnesses, environmental deviations, spills, releases, and regulatory events. Lead or oversee investigations of significant events.
Management Systems, Audits and Assurance: Develop and maintain an integrated HSE management system within the NAB Business Management System. Establish audit and assurance programs, evaluate site performance, verify closure and effectiveness of corrective actions, and report material gaps to leadership.
Performance Measurement and Executive Reporting: Define leading and lagging indicators, normalize and analyze HSE data, identify trends and systemic risks, and provide concise performance reporting and recommendations to NAB leadership. Facilitate periodic management reviews.
Capability, Training and Communication: Establish the NAB HSE competency and training framework. Ensure role-specific training, emergency preparedness, regulatory awareness, and leader capability are effectively implemented and periodically evaluated.
Emergency Preparedness and Crisis Support: Set expectations for emergency response, business continuity interfaces, drills, and communication. Provide senior HSE support during significant incidents and coordinate with internal stakeholders, regulators, responders, and technical experts as appropriate.
Capital Projects and Management of Change: Embed HSE and environmental requirements into engineering design, capital approval, equipment installation, process changes, acquisitions, and facility modifications. Ensure appropriate risk reviews, permitting, commissioning controls, and pre-startup readiness.
Budget and Resource Management: Develop and manage the NAB HSE budget and recommend priorities for compliance, risk reduction, training, monitoring, and capital investment. Provide functional direction to site HSE resources and external consultants.
External and Regulatory Representation: Serve as a senior NAB contact for HSE matters and, when designated, represent the business with regulatory authorities, auditors, insurers, industry groups, and external technical partners.
Continuous Improvement: Benchmark performance, share best practices across sites, and sponsor improvement initiatives that reduce risk, strengthen compliance, improve waste and resource efficiency, and support reliable plant operation without compromising HSE standards.
Scope and Key Relationships
Business scope: North American Baking manufacturing sites and designated supporting operations in the United States and Canada.
